Encyclopedia of Life
- Researchers from
around the world have launched the first 30,000 pages of the Encyclopedia
of Life. While obviously of great interest to biologists, it is also
targeting a wider audience of schoolchildren, educators, citizen
scientists, academics and those who are just curious about Earth's
species. The Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of websites that makes
all key information about all life. This first phase includes 20,000
species of fishes, 1,500 frogs and salamanders and about 1,000 pages of
tomatoes and potatoes. Pages list everything from the species’ habitat
and food preferences to their genetic composition. Contributors include
Harvard University, the Smithsonian Institution, the Natural History
Museum in London and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
